It’s Tourette’s Syndrome Awareness month!
When is Tourette’s Syndrome Awareness month?
Tourette’s Syndrome Awareness month runs from 15th May to 15th June each year.
What is the aim of Tourette’s Awareness Month?
Tourette’s Syndrome is often misunderstood and stigmatised; Tourette’s Awareness Month is an opportunity to highlight the challenges that those living with TS may experience.
While Tourette Syndrome (TS) is characterised by involuntary movements and vocalisations known as tics, its impact extends far beyond these.
Awareness month serves to educate the public about the complexities of living with TS. It is estimated that there are 300,000 individuals in the UK living with tic disorders, however, there remains disparity in access to diagnosis, treatment and support.
Individuals with TS often face misconceptions, discrimination, and social challenges due to the visible nature of their tics. These misunderstandings can lead to feelings of isolation, low self-esteem, and limited opportunities
By raising awareness, we can foster a more inclusive and empathic society. It’s an opportunity to promote acceptance, understanding, and support for those living with TS and their families. Through education and advocacy, we can work towards creating a society where individuals with TS are valued for their abilities and contributions, rather than judged for their differences.
Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month is not just about spreading knowledge; it’s about building a more compassionate and inclusive community for everyone.
